DEVONthink 4.4 brings smarter AI assistant, MCP integration, and better Markdown rendering

DEVONthink 4.4 Tycho has been released as the latest version of this application for professional document and information management. This update brings new AI workflows, Markdown authoring, web clipping, and storage changes. The release also makes the help viewer's chat assistant free in every edition.

Building on the AI changes, the new AI library stores roles, prompts, and skills inside databases. It includes ten modifiable functions, while users can create others manually or with AI assistance. Skills can call scripts, including AI-scripted scripts, and existing automations.

Meanwhile, the chat assistant can access all databases and most stand-alone Model Context Protocol (MCP) server tools when MCP tools are enabled. In addition, improved prompt caching makes multistep conversations faster and less expensive.

Following the AI updates, the WYSIWYG Markdown editor gains live tables, MathJax equations, and a syntax colorizer with custom themes. Markdown can export to native LaTeX or PDF through pdflatex, resolving WikiLinks and transclusions while retaining title, author, and date metadata.

For web content, local Markdownifier and Readability engines improve clipping speed and accuracy for navigation, ads, boilerplate, paywalls, and forums. A reader view provides a distraction-free display for bookmarks, HTML documents, and web archives.

Finally, encrypted and revision-proof databases use APFS disk images on macOS 26 Tahoe and later, replacing HFS+.
