RomM 5.0 launches with revamped UI and shareable savestates for this ROM manager & player

RomM 5.0 arrives as a major update for this open-source and self-hosted ROM management and playback platform. The release features a thorough redesign of the user interface, debuting a new visual language and design system. A familiar and flexible input model now ensures an optimal experience across mouse, touch, keyboard, and gamepad, with usability improvements made for a wide range of devices.

Building on this, the update lets users share game saves and savestates with others, expanding collaborative play and enabling communities to compare progress, optimize speedruns, or unlock new modes. While exploring your game library, RomM now offers interactive 3D boxart visualization as well as a CRT shader that emulates the display aesthetics of 1990s gaming for added nostalgia.

The backend sees major advancements, including server-side ROM patching: users can apply stored or uploaded patches without manual file handling. Device pairing is also streamlined with QR code support for Argosy Launcher and Playnite. Next, users can monitor server logs in real-time from the web UI, eliminating the need for SSH access.

Controller support is expanded with a new debug mode for testing input mappings. Permissions management gains per-user and per-group controls for improved sharing, and library music tracks stored within a ROMs' soundtrack folder can be played directly from details pages or accessed programmatically, opening the door to future features like background music playback and soundtrack playlists.

This feels like much more than a visual refresh. Being able to share save states with friends is a fantastic addition, especially for speedrunning or helping someone through a difficult part of a game. I also love the CRT shader and 3D box art—small details like these make retro gaming feel even more authentic.
