OPNsense Community Edition 26.7, code-named “Xenial Xenops” has been released as the latest version of this open source, FreeBSD-based firewall and routing software. This release introduces substantial platform upgrades by moving to FreeBSD 15.1, improving long-term maintainability and setting the groundwork for future advancements within the open source firewall and routing solution.

This release introduces the new Interface Assignments framework, which replaces the legacy module. The initial rollout ensures feature parity for administrators while enabling future additions through API-driven interface management.

Following improvements in recent versions, firewall management continues to modernize with Outbound NAT now operating under the new Source NAT architecture. This transition brings greater consistency to the administrative workflow and paves the way for streamlined future development.

For organizations using KEA DHCP, expanded options now include support for Dynamic DNS and dynamic IPv6 prefix delegation. These features offer network administrators greater flexibility in adapting to evolving infrastructure requirements.
