Plex introduces social lists, community forums, and personalized discovery features
Just a couple of weeks after Plex sparked controversy by announcing that its Lifetime Plex Pass subscription will triple in price to $750 starting July 1, the media server and streaming platform is now introducing a new set of social features, possibly as an attempt to soften the impact of the recent backlash. The update starts with Lists, now available for all users, allowing them to create, manage, and share collections of movies, TV shows, or individual episodes. Later this year, Plex plans to add list imports from other platforms, along with comments and reactions on friends’ lists.
Discussions will arrive this month, adding community forums directly tied to specific movies, shows, seasons, and episodes. The company is also adding image comments for reviews and discussions, giving users more ways to respond beyond text. Other upcoming features include Content Reactions, which use emoji based feedback instead of only star ratings, and Follow Anything, which sends alerts for activity related to lists, titles, cast, and crew.
Plex is also introducing Match Score, a personalized prediction system that estimates how much a user may enjoy a title based on taste, past ratings, and viewing history. The company says these features build on more than 100 million monthly viewing decisions and over 45 million user created watchlists, as it tries to position itself as a cross service discovery hub at a time when streaming remains fragmented across separate platforms.
