Files 4.1 brings toolbar customization, revamped settings, easier tag editing, and more

Files 4.1, the new release of the open-source file explorer for Windows, introduces several user-focused enhancements. Most notably, this version allows users to personalize the toolbar: you can now choose which buttons to display, rearrange their order, and show or hide labels according to your workflow. Alongside these changes, the standard settings dialog has been replaced by a dedicated settings page, making it easier to find options and search for settings using the omnibar.

Expanding the app’s personalization, Files 4.1 lets you change the display font for all interface elements. The “Open in Terminal” action now respects the default terminal set within Windows, aligning the tool with your system preferences. Adjustments to the single-click behavior offer greater flexibility for those who prefer alternative ways to open items. In the properties window, the comment field now supports multiple lines, broadening how users annotate files. With new theme-switching actions, you can also assign keyboard shortcuts to rapidly change between light and dark modes.

Additional improvements include video and audio tooltips displaying media duration, snappier tooltips in grid layout, support for AVI file previews, and the appearance of access keys from shell extensions within right-click menus. Multiple bug fixes complete the update.
