The iconic ZSNES emulator is back with GPU-powered PPU core, and it's called SUPER ZSNES
The original developers of the ZSNES emulator have reunited to introduce SUPER ZSNES, a Super Nintendo emulator written entirely from scratch. This new release brings critical technical improvements, including a GPU-powered picture processing unit (PPU) core that unlocks high-resolution Mode 7 graphics and enables per-game visual enhancements for select titles. In addition, SUPER ZSNES now features extensively reworked central and audio processing cores, aiming for accuracy beyond the original ZSNES.
Alongside these advancements, the emulator launches with the Super Enhancement Engine, currently offering custom enhancements for seven major games. Supported enhancements include high-resolution visuals not reliant on basic upscaling, texture and normal mapping, uncompressed audio, selective widescreen support, and overclocking for smoother gameplay. For Mode 7 titles using perspective effects, limited 3D rendering is provided, and all enhancements can be toggled individually to match player preferences.
Following changes to the interface, users will find classic elements like falling snow, now presented in higher definition, paired with improved usability. Standard emulation tools such as rewind, fast-forward, multiple save state options, automatic save history, bookmarks, and cheat code support are also included. SUPER ZSNES is available on Windows, Linux, macOS, and Android, with iOS support planned as development progresses.

Comments
The original ZSNES was a blessing to have in its early days, allowing decent, if slightly inaccurate emulation on modest hardware of the late 1990s. I'm very impressed with this initial release, and that the devs were kind enough to offer a GNU/Linux release for that growing userbase. I don't know how great the interest will be in a SNES emulator nowadays, even with the unique mod tools and enhancements they plan to offer - but I welcome this entry in the emulation scene.
