Procreate is officially coming to Mac with its next major Procreate 6 update next year
Procreate has announced the simultaneous development of Procreate 6 and Procreate Mac, marking its long requested move into the desktop market. The company says demand for a desktop version rose notably in 2024, leading it to pursue an affordable, high performance painting app for Mac users.
Both Procreate 6 and Procreate Mac are being built on the company’s next generation Phoenix technology, which also powers Procreate Dreams, and they share the same codebase. Procreate 6 is set to add several requested features, including more layers, adjustment layers, blend modes for groups, iCloud file sync, undo history saved in files, and layers that can extend beyond the canvas.
Because both projects are being developed together, Procreate now expects them to launch in 2027. The company says much of the work is still focused on the underlying technology, with the goal of keeping the experience familiar and avoiding disruption or new learning curves for current users. Procreate had previously avoided desktop due to concerns that touch displays still fall short of the iPad and Apple Pencil experience, so what changed now? Could a touchscreen MacBook be closer than expected? 👀
