ChatGPT Voice Mode is now available on Apple CarPlay

OpenAI has enabled ChatGPT’s Voice mode in Apple CarPlay, letting users talk to ChatGPT directly from their car’s dashboard. To use it, you need an iPhone running the latest versions of iOS and the ChatGPT app, along with a CarPlay compatible vehicle. From there, you can open ChatGPT in CarPlay and start a new voice chat.

Once launched, the CarPlay version shows a simple interface with a listening indicator and controls to mute or end the conversation. Users can also access recent and pinned chats, though returning to an earlier conversation still requires opening the app manually and selecting it from the screen, which ironically creates its own small distraction while driving if you ask me.

It is worth noting that this is not fully comparable to Siri’s built in car integration, since Apple’s safety restrictions limit ChatGPT in CarPlay to voice conversations only and there is also no wake word support, meaning every session has to be started manually. The ChatGPT app also cannot really control car functions, music playback, or iPhone settings, so it is safer to see this more as a conversation tool than a full blown car assistant. For that, you will still need to use Siri, for good or bad.
