TikTok will not implement end-to-end encryption for DMs, citing youth safety concerns

TikTok has confirmed to the BBC that it will not be introducing end-to-end encryption for DMs on its social platform, a position it justifies by pointing to the need to keep users, particularly younger individuals, safe. Unlike most other social networks and communication services, which have embraced end-to-end encryption to ensure user privacy, TikTok argues this technology impedes the ability of law enforcement and internal safety teams to intervene when direct messages contain harmful or illegal content.

While end-to-end encryption is widely recognized as the most secure way to protect digital conversations from third parties, advocates and privacy experts explain that it prevents anyone but the message sender and recipient from accessing message content. The majority of TikTok’s rivals have adopted this measure to resist hacking, corporate surveillance, and governmental overreach.

Building on this context, TikTok has emphasized the potential risks of making direct messages completely inaccessible to oversight, stating its decision is intended to distinguish its approach to safeguarding young users. Critics of the policy underline that, without robust encryption, user governance and security may be compromised, reigniting ongoing debates over where the balance should lie between privacy and proactive user protection.

Why would anyone use something in 2025 without end to end encryption and /or mfa ? While you start having providers secure enough against quantum computing (tuta) there are still those "competitors" who clearly want data to remain open and accessible for third parties - and with all the AI learning from "available" data anywhere, everyone should be aware enough to stay away from these platforms. We really need more education on those tools from kids / schools upto the highest ages (tablet users, smart TV's etc - as everything will be connected to ai agents during 2026 one way or another.)

"But think of the children!" I wonder if anyone is fooled by that argument anymore. If this platform really cared about its users' wellbeing they would remove infinite doomscrolling and the downward-spiralling algorithm that aims to addict and enrage users "to boost engagement" and ruin their mental health. Trash app.

Right, because using a reporting system (e.g. only giving them insight upon reporting) and maybe showing warnings triggered via Keywords would do the same thing, but they couldn't mass-analyze everything for anything they wanted to, which would just break the whole reason for there to be dm's, I mean give them some slack here.

Why would you expect privacy or security on social media apps? It's like taking your house cat to hunt and expecting him not to run away immediately.

Stupid brainwashers, don't listen to them. E2EE will make kids safer by not letting data leaking like crazy.

yes, of course, youth safety... we definitely haven't picked up what companies Really mean when they say that... it's not like there was this whole thing about surveillance with age verification systems just a week or two ago or anything

Parents need to do their job as parents. Communities, cities, and governments need to ensure parents have the time and money to do their job as parents. Capitalism, while it has/had its benefits, has made it so neither of the above seem feasible. So, now parents want to (but are more likely forced to) outsource their job as parents the government and for-profit companies.
