OpenAI introduces plugin support in Codex with app integrations, skills, and MCP servers
OpenAI has launched plugin support in Codex, allowing users to enhance their experience with reusable workflows, app integrations, and custom skills. This update lets plugins bundle skills, external app connections, and MCP servers into unified workflows, expanding the range of tasks Codex can perform.
With this release, skills provide reusable instructions that help Codex execute specific kinds of work, ensuring it follows correct steps and references relevant scripts. App integrations enable Codex to connect directly with services such as GitHub, Slack, and Google Drive, offering the ability to both retrieve information and issue commands within those platforms. MCP servers in plugins extend Codex's access even further by linking to external tools or shared resources beyond the local project environment.
Users can install plugins by browsing a curated directory in the Codex app or by using the command-line interface. Once installed, plugins are immediately available within the prompt window for direct use. While these workflows become accessible upon installation, all existing approval settings within Codex still apply, and any external services maintain their standard authentication and data privacy policies.
