OpenBSD 8.0 brings Clang/LLVM 22 base compiler, 64 VCPUs VM & Intel Arc A-Series support
The OpenBSD project has officially released version 8.0, marking a landmark moment for the security-focused operating system with its transition to Clang/LLVM 22 as the base compiler across all clang-supported architectures. Most notably, OpenBSD/SPARC64 has completed its migration to Clang, making OpenBSD the only operating system still actively supporting the sparc64 platform with a modern toolchain. The release also brings substantial graphics improvements, including native support for Intel Arc A-Series GPUs and an updated DRM stack based on Linux 6.18.53, enabling amd64 systems to map more than 4 GB of VRAM through an expanded 512 GB kernel virtual address space, a dramatic increase from the previous 4 GB limit.
Virtualization and cryptographic performance receive significant attention in this release, with VMM now supporting up to 64 VCPUs per guest VM and accelerated swap encryption on AMD64 and ARM64 leveraging AES CPU instructions for improved throughput. Platform-specific enhancements include hibernate support added to ARM64, LED load-average indicators for ARM64 and RISC 64 boards, and new hardware drivers such as qwz for Qualcomm WCN7850 Wi-Fi devices and sambat for battery monitoring on Samsung Galaxy Book4 Edge machines. The bundled software stack includes LibreSSL 4.4 and OpenSSH 10.6, alongside enhanced httpd capabilities for custom HTTP header manipulation and filtering rules. As one of the most feature-rich releases in the project's history, OpenBSD 8.0 continues the team's commitment to code correctness and security while expanding hardware compatibility across legacy and emerging platforms.
