Mozilla releases Firefox 158 with JPEG XL support and faster form-filling in Smart Windows

Mozilla has released Firefox 158, bringing a suite of productivity enhancements and format improvements to the popular web browser. One of the standout additions is Smart Window's upgraded form-filling capability, which now suggests relevant data based on open tabs and saved autofill information. Users clicking into form fields or selecting “Fill” options will receive intelligent suggestions that streamline data entry across websites. Additionally, Mozilla has expanded the built-in translations feature to support Albanian, Belarusian, and Filipino, furthering its commitment to multilingual accessibility across the platform.

The update also addresses long-standing accessibility and visual concerns. Firefox now generates more accessible PDFs when saving pages or printing on Linux and macOS systems, simultaneously resolving various rendering bugs, including missing mathematical symbols that had affected technical and academic users. On the visual front, Firefox has adopted support for JPEG XL, an image format offering superior compression compared to WebP, JPEG, PNG, and GIF. This decision aligns Mozilla with Chrome's recent move toward the format. Meanwhile, the New Tab page now preserves a library of custom wallpapers under “Your images”, allowing users to maintain multiple aesthetic options rather than cycling through only the most recent selection.

Perhaps more subtle but no less impactful is Firefox 158's refinement of scrolling behavior. The browser no longer rounds scroll positions to whole screen pixels, delivering smoother and more precise motion, particularly noticeable on high-resolution displays or when pages are zoomed in. Combined, these updates represent Mozilla's continued effort to balance performance, accessibility, and user experience improvements in an increasingly competitive browser landscape.

Another update goes by and still no mention of security improvements to the browser. I use it anyways but it's hard to be proud.

If you want a hardened version of Firefox, check out Mullvad Browser.

@Myrano Mullvad isn't improving Fission (Firefox's website isolation sandbox), it's just Tor anti-fingerprinting without the Tor network.

@George9494 Thank you, I didn't know that piece of software of Firefox. And you think it should be prioritized in Firefox development ?
