Mozilla launches Firefox Enterprise with on-premises management for European companies
Mozilla has officially unveiled Firefox Enterprise, a new browser solution designed for organizations seeking greater control over their digital infrastructure and data governance. Launched on October 12, 2026, the product combines the Firefox browser, built on Mozilla's independent Gecko engine, with a self-hosted management console that allows IT teams to centrally manage browser policies, access controls, and AI usage within their own infrastructure. This approach addresses growing concerns among institutions about technological dependency and data visibility in an increasingly consolidated browser market dominated by Chrome and Safari architectures.
The initial rollout targets European enterprises, with sales operations focused on France, Germany, Austria, and Switzerland, though additional markets are expected to follow. Mozilla CEO Anthony Enzor-DeMeo emphasized the strategic importance of the launch, stating, “If all your options are built with the same technology underneath, 'choice' is a lie. So is control. We built Firefox differently. And we're bringing its independent architecture to institutions that are ready to rethink their dependencies and risk.” By leveraging Gecko, the only major browser engine developed outside Google and Apple, Firefox Enterprise offers organizations a tangible path toward reducing single-vendor reliance while maintaining compatibility with existing identity providers, security tools, and device management systems already in place.
Looking ahead, Mozilla indicated that Thunderbird Enterprise is currently in development, which would extend the same customer-controlled infrastructure model to email and communications platforms. The move represents Mozilla's broader commitment to technological sovereignty, framed around four pillars: more control, more transparency, more choice, and more resilience. As enterprises worldwide reassess their technology dependencies amid rising concerns about data privacy and vendor lock-in, Firefox Enterprise positions Mozilla as an alternative provider for organizations prioritizing institutional autonomy over browser management.

Comments
While gecko is not chromium, it is not independent. Google gives Mozilla ~80% of their total funding. Mozilla is abandoning their founding principles by launching advertising, AI, and for-profit enterprise products. They are become just like the technologies and organizations they claim to be different than.
If you want a real alternative look to
Ladybird or at very least firefox forks such as
Zen Browser or
Floorp
Bro Zen Browser / Floorp is based on Firefox... And Ladybird isn't ready for now...
Firefox Entreprise that in reality not much to do with Firefox, it's just a service to manage Firefox profiles, get some analytics and fancy charts. It was what Firefox ESR was for, but then profiles were managed manually. Google and Apple have complete MDM services to fully manage Android and Apple devices in every aspect, which are overkill tools with complex ToS and even so, some data may be ultimately stored in US. And since most company tasks are through browsers, Firefox Entreprise could be more suitable, especially if the company cares for digital sovereignty (whatever it legally means), and it's still some money that doesn't come from Google. Also, Mozilla is a for-profit company, when it's Firefox Foundation that is not.
