Bootstrap returns with version 6 Alpha, bringing ground-up modernization of the framework

After years of relative silence, the iconic front-end framework Bootstrap has returned with the release of its first alpha version 6.0. Bootstrap 6 represents a major overhaul to one of the most widely-used open source design systems in web development history. Since its debut in 2011, Bootstrap has accumulated over 1.75 billion installations globally, cementing its place as a foundational tool for developers worldwide.

The new version has been modernized from the ground up, featuring significant architectural changes including a Sass module system, expanded support for native browser APIs and elements, ESM-only JavaScript plugins, and integration with newer CSS standards. Lead maintainer Mark Otto acknowledged the extended gap since Bootstrap 5, explaining his focus during that period shifted to various other projects. Despite the rise of AI-assisted coding and numerous competing design libraries, Otto reaffirmed Bootstrap's original mission: “To help people build more software, faster and easier”, positioning v6 for use by both human developers and AI tools alike.

Bootstrap 6 Alpha 1 is now available on npm and jsDelivr for early adopters to begin testing. Developers should note that the JavaScript has moved to an ESM-only architecture, representing a breaking change from earlier versions. As an alpha release, Bootstrap 6 is still far from production-ready, but marks the beginning of what the team hopes will be another chapter in the project's 15-year legacy.
