Spotify adds live listening activity and Jam invites to in-app Messages

Spotify is rolling out two updates to its in-app Messages tool: listening activity and request to Jam. Listening activity is opt in and shows what a user is currently playing in real time inside Messages, or their most recently played song if they are not actively listening. It is only visible to Message contacts, can be turned off at any time, and users can still view the activity of contacts who have opted in even if they do not share their own.

Users can enable listening activity from Privacy and social settings, then see it in chat rows and at the top of conversations. Tapping a contact’s activity lets users add the track to their library, start playback, open the track menu, or react with one of six standard emojis.

Request to Jam lets Premium users invite Message contacts to a shared remote listening session. If the recipient accepts, they become the host, and both participants can add tracks, listen together, and see suggested songs based on combined tastes. Free users can join when invited by a Premium user, invites expire after a few minutes, and participants can leave anytime. Both features are rolling out now on iOS and Android in Messages enabled markets, with broader availability expected by early February.
