Google NotebookLM adds flashcards, quizzes, and new formats for Audio Overviews
Google has recently added several new tools to NotebookLM to support active learning and research. Students and educators can now generate flashcards and quizzes from lecture notes, research papers, or reports, with options to share sets via links. Both formats include an explain feature that provides citation-backed overviews to clarify concepts or correct mistakes.
The update also introduces redesigned reports with a Blog Post format and dynamic suggestions based on the topic or industry. Users can create glossaries, explainers, character analyses, critiques, or custom templates. A new Learning Guide works like a tutor, using open-ended questions and adaptive explanations to break down material step by step. The platform now also includes public notebooks built from OpenStax peer-reviewed textbooks in subjects such as Biology, Chemistry, and Business.
Audio Overviews gain new tones, including Brief, Critique, and Debate formats, offering different perspectives on material. Educators can assign Notebooks in Canvas and Schoology through Gemini LTI, with Google Classroom support coming soon.
