Godot 4.5 adds stencil buffer, screen reader support, visionOS export, shader baker & more

Godot 4.5 is now available, delivering an array of new capabilities for developers building 2D and 3D games with this open source engine. This update introduces stencil buffer support, letting creators apply effects like “drilling holes” in walls or shapes — regardless of whether the geometry itself is currently rendered. While extending visual possibilities, it also expands platform compatibility.

Godot 4.5 adds native export support for Apple’s visionOS. This allows developers to target devices such as the Apple Vision Pro directly from their projects. Linux users running Wayland benefit from new sub-window support, enabling the engine to natively spawn independent windows for improved workflows. Following these additions, performance enhancements come by way of expanded ahead-of-time asset pipeline compilation, which can substantially decrease in-editor wait times.

Support for screen readers is now built in, enhancing accessibility for visually impaired users as well as those with limited literacy or learning disabilities. In the editor, developers can preview translations directly within the viewport to streamline GUI internationalization. Debugging tools see upgrades too: the engine now offers script backtracing for pinpointing code issues and introduces custom loggers to capture targeted error and log messages. Rounding out the release are numerous other enhancements, such as a script color picker, chunk tilemap physics, batch asset editing, DPI-aware icons, WebAssembly SIMD support, edge-to-edge support on Android, and much more.

@Juri - Oh no, don't be confused - they're not actually children. They just act like it.

@city_zen - Nice catch, I've been doing that a lot lately.

Great update, just as usual. Congratulations to the Godot team and all contributors for this great engine, when UE and Unity go this opposite way.
