GitHub launches MCP Registry for easy discovery and installation of MCP servers
GitHub has launched the MCP Registry, creating a centralized directory for discovering Model Context Protocol (MCP) servers. This new registry aims to simplify how developers locate, explore, and integrate servers designed for AI interoperability, building on GitHub’s existing role as a hub for the majority of MCP servers.
As a reminder, MCP is an extensible protocol that allows AI agents and tools to communicate seamlessly. The Registry is relevant for developers building with GitHub Copilot, AI agents, or any tool compatible with MCP, increasing its scope and usability across the ecosystem.
The curated directory features MCP servers both from major partners and the open source community. Each server listing is linked to its GitHub repository, enabling users to review documentation, evaluate project activity, and make informed decisions.
Developers can discover, install, and use these servers directly from within Visual Studio Code. Server listings can be sorted by GitHub stars and community engagement, further aiding in selection. This integration supports work across the broader MCP-compatible landscape, helping developers quickly find and implement the tools they need.
