CoMaps adds CarPlay, time-based routing, address editing, and map updates

CoMaps version 2025.08.31-15 introduces Apple CarPlay support for iOS, letting users integrate the app into Apple’s in-car system. Routing now includes conditional, time-based restrictions for more accurate navigation, while addresses can be added directly from the map editor. The app also updates its base with OpenStreetMap data from August 22, 2025, and refines routing logic to better account for turns, traffic lights, and stop signs.

Places now show confirmed existence and updated opening hours, and the map gains a refreshed dark style, colorful labels, clearer entrances, and expanded road shield colors across Europe. Label handling supports newlines and avoids redundant brand names. Orientation has been improved by prioritizing GPS bearing and showing the compass only when not facing exactly north.

On Android, navigation adds a speed indicator and replaces speed with ETA in the panel. Performance improves with reduced location polling, Material 3 progress bars, migration to Material UI components, and conversion of PNG icons to SVG. The update also includes translation refreshes, various fixes, and the deprecation of OpenGL ES 2.0 support.

It's to note that many of theses enhancements and fixes come from OrganicMaps. Both projects are very active with great devs. Forks are often a good thing, new ideas and priorities emerge even if the contributor time is reduced for each project. And maybe one day only one of CoMaps et OrganicMaps would be maintained, or maybe both would be complete different beasts. At the moment, it's many new functionalities and fresh data for all users!
