Spotify adds direct messaging to let users share music and podcasts within the platform

Spotify is rolling out a new (and not exactly in-demand) direct messaging feature that lets users share songs, podcasts, and audiobooks directly in the app. Available this week in select markets, it works on mobile for Free and Premium users aged 16 and older.

Messages can be sent by tapping the share icon in the Now Playing view, but only to people on the same Spotify plan or those previously connected through Jams, Blends, or Collaborative Playlists. Shared content and conversations are stored in a dedicated inbox under the profile picture. Whether artist accounts will be able to use messaging to engage fans has not been specified, though the feature could potentially resemble Instagram's Broadcast Channels.

The feature supports one-on-one chats with text and emoji reactions, is protected by industry-standard encryption, and gives users control to accept or reject requests, block others, or disable messaging entirely. Content can be reported for review, and the company says it will monitor for harmful or unlawful activity.
