Google Translate is testing a new AI language learning tool to compete with Duolingo

Google is developing a new language learning feature within Google Translate, positioning it as a potential competitor to several learning platforms like Duolingo. Android Authority discovered and activated the hidden "Practice" tool in the latest release, which uses AI to create personalized lessons based on each user’s proficiency and practice needs.

The system asks learners to specify their level as Basic, Intermediate or Advanced before beginning exercises. Supported languages include English, Spanish, French and Portuguese, though only French and Spanish are currently available for practice. Users can engage with preset scenarios or create their own by describing situations in a text prompt, offering context-driven exercises.

References to a "trial period" with early and unlimited access suggest the feature is free for now but may later require payment. It's also yet to be seen whether this would be a standalone service or bundled with Google Gemini, and no official announcement or release timeline has been provided. Either way, it is clear that this new approach will try to take some market share from Duolingo, which not long ago also made public its intentions to become an AI company.

The hardest part is making sure that the grammar used within these languages is actually correct. As cool as ai is right now, I don't trust it to accurately teach new language learners properly just yet.
