DietPi 9.16 adds Debian 13 and early Debian 14 support, new hardware updates, and more
The release of DietPi 9.16 brings notable operating system and hardware advances to this lightweight Debian-based distribution for single board computers. Most notably, the updated release introduces support for Debian 13 “Trixie”, and offers early support for the upcoming testing version, Debian 14 “Forky”.
Alongside the broader distribution compatibility, this update delivers several hardware-focused enhancements. On Raspberry Pi, users will find the primary UART adapter enabled by default on first boot, addressing a previous issue. For ROCK PI S devices, new device tree overlays allow switching the USB-C port between host and OTG modes, moving away from the prior default of peripheral-only mode. RISC-V users now gain access to Docker Compose, Snapcast, and Amiberry installation options via the dietpi-software menu.
Following hardware and platform improvements, DietPi 9.16 also optimizes update and installation performance by reducing the number of apt update calls within its scripts, helping to decrease total update time and disk wear. The internal scripts, as well as G_* functions, now automatically re-execute with administrative privileges if needed, with special benefits for users running the fish shell where sudo with shell aliases is less straightforward.
In addition, updates or adjustments affect bundled software such as Domoticz, Kodi, Kubo, Java, PaperMC, Nextcloud Talk, Synapse, WireGuard, and Portainer. The release also includes routine minor enhancements and numerous bug fixes, improving overall system stability and usability.
