X pauses encrypted DMs ahead of beta launch of new messaging platform XChat for paid users
X has temporarily paused access to its encrypted direct messages (DMs) feature, preventing users from sending new encrypted messages while still allowing them to view previous ones. This decision comes just a couple days before X is set to roll out the beta version of XChat, its rumored upcoming enhanced messaging tool.
Following the pause of encrypted DMs, XChat is now being tested by select beta users and paid subscribers, and appears close to a public release. The new app is designed to fully replace X’s current DM system with a more advanced messaging experience.
While XChat is not officially released, rumored features include group messaging, end-to-end encryption, vanishing messages, file sharing, unread message indicators, and protection via a four-digit passcode. These expected improvements address earlier limitations of encrypted DMs, which were only available to verified users and lacked features such as group chat, media encryption, device sync, and strong protection against man-in-the-middle attacks. The development of XChat aligns with Elon Musk’s previously stated goal to build a secure, Signal alternative messaging platform directly into X.

I understand wanting to make money, but E2EE should just be default on any messaging app. Client-side, trustless.
Anyways, who would trust X over open source like Signal?
Nobody but its about usability and access Its incredibly hard to convince people to head to another platform just for messaging
I normally agree with you. Even to move people from Whatsapp to Signal is difficult, when the two are almost the same.
But most peopled don't use X for their main messaging. You have to pay to message other members who don't pay for a subscription.
Great news for Hegseth and Waltz that will now be able to text war plans on a POTUS-blessed platform, that could also add some backdoors in case of emergency (like in some hypothetical foreign invasion). For regulars users still wanting to pay 8 bucks a month, they can use Element and rent a VPS to store their data. Smarter and safer.
But is Element woke though?
