Visual Studio Code 1.100 adds GPT 4.1, reusable prompts, and improved multi-window support

Microsoft’s Visual Studio Code version 1.100 introduces support for OpenAI's apply patch editing format with GPT 4.1 and o4-mini in agent mode, enabling noticeably faster AI-powered edits, particularly when working with large files. This update also expands compatibility to Anthropic’s replace string tool in agent mode, now supporting Claude Sonnet 3.7 and 3.5, which further boosts editing efficiency.

Following these AI editing upgrades, the integrated chat experience has received several enhancements. Users can now set custom instructions and create reusable prompts for the AI chat, making interactions more tailored and efficient. Smarter results are provided through added tools for working with GitHub, extensions, and notebooks. Additionally, image and streamable HTTP support is now available for the Managed Chat Protocol, enabling a wider range of content to be shared in chat sessions.

On the performance front, AI chat responses are faster on repeat requests, and edits performed in agent mode have also been optimized for speed. Rounding out the update, editor usability has been improved by refining multi-window support for chat and editor interfaces, and staged changes are now easier to identify, which aids in version control tasks.
