Microsoft Copilot adds hands-free “Hey, Copilot!” voice activation for Windows Insiders

Microsoft has begun rolling out a Microsoft Copilot app update for Windows, introducing a hands-free experience using the activation phrase “Hey, Copilot”. With this feature, Windows Insiders can invoke Copilot by voice without needing to use a keyboard or mouse. This opt-in function is available when the feature is enabled in the Copilot app settings and the PC is unlocked.

To get started, users enable “Hey, Copilot” within the Copilot app's settings. Saying the activation phrase triggers a visual microphone indicator and a chime, signaling that Copilot is listening. Ending a conversation is straightforward — users may tap “X” on-screen, or Copilot will exit automatically after a short period of inactivity, confirmed by another chime.

The hands-free experience uses an on-device wake word spotter, which monitors audio for the “Hey, Copilot” phrase using a 10-second audio buffer that remains only in memory. This approach helps address privacy expectations, as the system responds exclusively to the wake phrase.

Following these changes, the update is being rolled out via the Microsoft Store to all Windows Insider Channels. Initial support is limited to Insiders worldwide whose system display language is set to English.

Well, it's a smart way to make the brand "Copilot" more mainstream, just like "Siri" or "Alexa", since Microsoft pours gazillions bucks in ads but I've personality never heard anyone pronouncing this word. Good'old "Skype", yes, for decades, just as "Office", "Windows" or "XBox". But "Copilot", never.
