Microsoft to end support for remote desktop app on Windows by May 2025
Microsoft has announced that it will end support for its Remote Desktop app for Windows on May 27, 2025. Users leveraging this app for Windows 365, Azure Virtual Desktop, or Microsoft Dev Box will need to transition to the Windows App, which was launched in September 2024. The Windows app offers features such as multimonitor support, dynamic display resolutions, and access to cloud PCs and virtual desktops.
After the specified date, connections to Windows 365, Azure Virtual Desktop, and Microsoft Dev Box via the Remote Desktop app from the Microsoft Store will be blocked. This change affects only the Microsoft Store version of the Remote Desktop app, not the standalone Remote Desktop client installer (MSI). The built-in Remote Desktop Connection app, which has been available in Windows for over two decades, will continue to function, allowing users to connect to machines as long as Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP) is supported in the Windows app.
Currently, the Windows app supports only work or school Microsoft accounts, with no support for personal accounts. However, the mention of RDP support in the Windows app indicates that Microsoft may eventually enable personal account support in the future.
