Zettlr 4.0 launches with new table editor, in-app PDF/image viewer & big workflow upgrades
Celebrating its eighth anniversary, Zettlr 4.0 arrives as the app's largest update so far, with major changes across editing, workflows, and documentation. The headline addition is a fully rewritten table editor, developed over 18 months to address past data loss and stability issues. Built on CodeMirror, it integrates more closely with the writing workflow and improves reliability when creating and editing Markdown tables.
The table editor also adds broader keyboard control for navigating cells and managing rows and columns, including editing without the visual table UI. Common shortcuts now work inside table cells, including bold, links, math, syntax highlighting, and more. Grid tables are no longer supported in the visual table editor, though some navigation shortcuts still work, with expanded support being considered for later.
Beyond tables, Zettlr 4.0 adds an in app image and PDF viewer for quick previews alongside your documents, with image zoom and scrolling and PDF viewing based on Chromium. The release also ships a rewritten citation parser with clearer feedback and stronger compatibility with Pandoc style citation syntax, including curly brace keys and pandoc crossref support.
Other updates include faster exports, improved footnote and link workflows, a new onboarding screen, refreshed writing stats views, and a faster file system layer for detecting external changes.
