ONLYOFFICE Docs 9.2 introduces AI grammar checks, shortcut customization, macros and more

ONLYOFFICE Docs 9.2 has been released with new AI powered features, including built-in spell and grammar checking through the AI plugin. Users can now review text for errors either in full or by selection, and receive explanations and correction suggestions directly in the editor.

The update also adds customizable keyboard shortcuts in Advanced Settings and a macro recording tool that lets users record, save, and replay sequences of actions to handle repetitive tasks more quickly.

PDF editing gains support for custom redaction colors when hiding sensitive information, and form creation is improved with text labels for checkboxes and radio buttons. When adding new form fields, users can also assign roles to guide expected inputs and structure forms more clearly. You can check the full list of changes in the official release notes here.

Thanks for your reply and comments, TheEmperorArt.

But it looks to me that you are assuming (please correct me if I’m wrong) that R7 Office is a Russian fork of OnlyOffice—as if OnlyOffice were a Latvian piece of open-source software that some Russians decided to fork. It is most definitely NOT. It is a Russian piece of open-source software that, in recent times, has tried to hide its ties to Russia through several means. For example, that Matryoshka of shell companies I described in my previous comment, which is both hilarious and repulsive.

And it’s not just me or a Ukrainian newspaper saying this. Here are a couple of additional sources describing the issue of OnlyOffice’s true origin:

https://fossforce.com/2025/07/lyon-france-adopts-onlyoffice-from-russia-with-love/ https://forum.cryptpad.org/d/232-onlyoffice-concerns-vendor-makes-shady-moves

There are many more, but I don’t want to flood the comment with links. To be clear, I personally don’t mind that they are Russian. But I DO mind that they lie about their origins and try to deceive the public, its users, and potential users. As you say, given that the software is open source and has, at least technically, an office in Latvia, they have to abide by GDPR rules. It’s probably safe to use, but that is a personal decision people should make while having all the information at their disposal. A quick note about something you said regarding open-source software: “OnlyOffice is open source and you can look at their code.” Well, that’s right—I can LOOK at the code. But given that I, like well over 99% of office software users, have no idea how to UNDERSTAND the code to see if there’s something malicious in it or not, that’s not really useful to me personally. It’d be like saying, “You can read that text, it’s clearly written in Sanskrit.” Yes, you could read that text … if you can read Sanskrit (which I also can’t, by the way 😂).

Another issue here is the “country of origin” feature that AlternativeTo implemented a while ago. As I said, it looked like a useful addition at first. But then you get situations like this one with OnlyOffice, where if you go by the label on the topmost Matryoshka doll you think it’s a Latvian/EU company, while the truth is quite different. Again, there’s nothing wrong (to me) with being Russian, but there is something wrong with lying about your country of origin. And it’s not the only case on AlternativeTo. For instance, Opera is still listed as a Norwegian company/software developer, while it has been majority-owned by a Chinese company since 2020. To me, that makes them much more Chinese than Norwegian—but you may disagree.

I'm delighted to confirm that here at Alternative To, ONLYOFFICE is still a 100% LATVIAN piece of software, that has absolutely no ties whatsoever to Russia or Russian developers .... 😂

Thanks for bringing that up, I was not aware.

Paul

The legal entity behind ONLYOFFICE is Ascensio System SIA, which is a company registered in Riga, Latvia. We never said it doesn't have ties with Russia, but the country of origin on AlternativeTo is about where the company's registered and the legislation of the country it's registered in.

Paul, thanks for your reply.

However, there’s a problem with AlternativeTo’s “country of origin” feature.

Take ONLYOFFICE for example. Officially, it is developed by Ascensio System SIA, a company registered in Latvia. But, and this is a big “but”, Ascensio System SIA is 100% owned by a UK company, Ascensio System Limited. Aaaaand that UK company is, in turn, 100% owned by a Singaporean company, ONLYOFFICE Capital Group Pte. Ltd. Aaaaaand this Singaporean holding company is 95% owned by Lev Bannov—who, surprise, surprise, is a Russian developer who has led ONLYOFFICE’s development since the very beginning. Bannov now (also?) holds Turkish citizenship and lists an address in Turkey, but let’s be honest…

I could go on and on, but this Ukrainian website has all the details for anyone interested: https://epravda-com-ua.translate.goog/publications/2022/07/06/688888?_x_tr_sl=auto&_x_tr_tl=en

I understand that AlternativeTo currently lists over 132,000 apps, and it’s unrealistic for you to investigate the corporate structure and nationality of each one. Still, labeling ONLYOFFICE as “Latvian” and “EU” is very misleading—especially given that the EU and Russia are on opposite sides of an ongoing war.

So, maybe you should rethink the “country of origin” feature of AlternativeTo. It can be useful in some cases, so removing it entirely may not be ideal. But you could add an option like “country of origin: undetermined”, or something similar that cannot be easily circumvented by hiding your nationality behind shell companies, like ONLYOFFICE does.

Here's an idea City_zen, why don't you add R7 Office, the Russian fork of OnlyOffice to alternativeto. I wouldn't rely on Russian or Ukrainian source given that they are direct parties to the war, regardless of who you side with.

Personally, I couldn't care less given that OnlyOffice is open source and you can look at their code that is available or even fork of it like the Russians did and make a Ukrainian version if you so wish.

Plus OnlyOffice, complies with GDPR as it needs to be since it Latvian based and is transparent with data collection and follows international security standards. If they have a data issue like hosting international user's data in Russia or something of the sort that practically all of the Chinese programs have done at some point in time, then I'll share your concern.
