Perplexity launches AI-powered tool for conversational patent research

Perplexity has launched Perplexity Patents, an AI-powered research agent designed to make patent exploration more accessible. It supports natural language searches, allowing users to ask questions like “patents on AI for language learning” without needing complex keyword syntax. Results appear instantly with citations, inline document previews, and direct access to original sources.

The system keeps conversational context, enabling users to refine or expand searches without starting over. It recognizes synonyms and related terms to uncover prior art that keyword tools often miss, such as linking “fitness trackers” with “activity bands” or “health monitoring wearables.” Powered by an agentic research system on Perplexity’s exabyte-scale infrastructure, it gathers information from patents, academic papers, software repositories, and public datasets to show a broader view of emerging technologies.

Perplexity Patents is available globally in beta, free for all users, with additional features and higher limits for Pro and Max subscribers.
