Pi-hole 6.2 released with security upgrades, Alpine Linux support, and DNS enhancements
Pi-hole FTL v6.3, Web v6.3, and Core v6.2 are now available, bringing numerous updates to this free, open source network-wide ad blocking solution. Key security improvements include a shorter validity period for self-signed TLS certificates and a stricter Content Security Policy (CSP) to bolster protection against cross-site scripting attacks.
In this release, users also gain enhanced networking features: smart DNS interface detection, netlink ARP cache handling, better handling of special domains, DNS localization, and an improved DHCP API, providing robust IPv6 support and more reliable DNS operations. Building on core platform improvements, Pi-hole now offers full native support for Alpine Linux. This includes compatibility with Alpine's APK package manager and the OpenRC init system, making installation and management easier for container-based deployments.
Following these updates, shell users benefit from bash-style command line autocompletion, while the web interface receives usability enhancements. Web server configuration is now more flexible, with new options for web server fine-tuning, enhanced API endpoints, and online documentation for configuration files. Under the hood, component updates include SQLite 3.50.4, dnsmasq v2.92test21, updated CivetWeb for improved web server functionality, and TOML library c17. Memory handling and gravity database stability have also been improved to reduce resource use and enhance error recovery. Additional bug fixes and stability improvements are included.
