Mullvad VPN now uses quantum-resistant WireGuard tunnels by default on desktop platforms

Mullvad has rolled out the 2025.2 desktop release of its VPN, introducing quantum-resistant WireGuard tunnels by default on Windows. This update aligns with the existing default settings on other desktop platforms. Users connected to the VPN should now notice the “Quantum resistance” feature indicator, unless it has been manually disabled. To enable this feature, users can navigate to Settings → VPN settings → WireGuard settings → Quantum-resistant tunnel and set it to either Automatic or On.

Mullvad aims to extend this default setting to iOS and Android platforms in the future, pending further testing to ensure functionality. While current WireGuard tunnels have no known vulnerabilities, they could be susceptible to future decryption by advanced quantum computers. The new feature addresses this potential threat by employing post-quantum secure key encapsulation mechanisms to exchange a pre-shared key for WireGuard, enhancing security against potential future quantum-based attacks.
