Apple pauses AI notification summaries for news alerts in latest iOS 18.3 beta

Apple's iOS 18.3 update introduces several adjustments to the Apple Intelligence notification summaries feature, which consolidates notifications into a single message for quick access. Currently, summaries for the News and Entertainment category have been suspended as Apple works on enhancements following complaints from news outlets, including the BBC, over misrepresented articles.

With this update, all notification summaries will now appear in italics, distinguishing them from standard notifications. Users will also gain the ability to disable summaries for specific apps directly from the lock screen. Additionally, Apple will notify users that the notification summaries feature is in beta and may contain errors upon activation.

These changes align with Apple's previous commitment to clarify when the text being displayed is a summarization by Apple Intelligence. The iOS 18.3 update is currently available to developer beta testers, with a public beta release expected within the next week. The general public release date has not been announced yet.

All the AI-based things are, to be honest, in alpha, or at best in beta version. And the whole industry has yet to announce the release version date.

I agree. There is still a lot of learning to do for AI companies in regards to how to make the best AI possible, and a lot of bugs and kinks that need to be figured out. Sure, other companies have had a head start with this, allowing them more time to reiterate and improve their models to be far better with time. But, at the same time, some AI softwares are also getting worse, so I definitely think we're still in an early stage before all the issues have been ironed out and nearly everything can be answered correctly by AI. In some ways, AI may be getting worse in ability by having so many safeguards, but I guess it's better to be safe than sorry with technology that could truly become a powerful, everyday necessity.
