Android 16's first beta brings Live Updates, APV codec, large screen enhancements and more
Google has released the first beta of Android 16, available for developers and early adopters with Pixel devices. This update introduces significant changes, including the phasing out of apps' ability to restrict screen orientation and resizability on large screens. A notable feature introduced is Live Updates, a new class of notifications designed to help users monitor and quickly access important ongoing activities, akin to iOS’ Live Notifications.
Android 16 enhances media capabilities, supporting the Advanced Professional Video (APV) codec for high-quality video recording and post-production. It also adds low-level support for vertical text rendering, aiding languages such as Japanese. Accessibility improvements are included through new APIs, broadening app reach.
Samsung's new Gemini Extensions on the S25 series demonstrate enhanced integration with Android apps, with Google planning to extend this functionality to more devices. Android 16 also introduces predictive back system animations for apps targeting the release, with default animations for back-to-home, cross-task, and cross-activity actions. In addition, predictive back support is now available for 3-button navigation. This first beta also includes numerous other developer-focused changes, as well as other enhancements.
