Ubuntu 24.10 “Oracular Oriole” beta released with Linux Kernel 6.11, GNOME 47, and more
Canonical has announced the beta release of Ubuntu 24.10, code-named “Oracular Oriole”. This version is powered by the Linux kernel 6.11 and includes GNOME 47, an updated desktop installer, OpenSSL 3.3, GCC 14 compiler, updated Mesa drivers, an optimized Power Profiles Manager, a new Security Center app, an improved App Center, Firefox 130, LibreOffice 24.8.3, and Thunderbird 128.
NVIDIA users will be switched to Wayland by default instead of Xorg, with plans to resolve any issues across Ubuntu 24.10, 25.04, and 25.10 before the LTS release in April 2026.
The beta release includes images from Ubuntu Desktop, Server, and Cloud products, as well as various flavors like Edubuntu, Kubuntu, Lubuntu, Ubuntu Budgie, Ubuntu Cinnamon, UbuntuKylin, Ubuntu MATE, Ubuntu Studio, Ubuntu Unity, and Xubuntu.
Canonical states that “The Beta images are known to be reasonably free of showstopper image build or installer bugs, while representing a very recent snapshot of 24.10 that should be representative of the features intended to ship with the final release expected on October 10th, 2024.”
