Meta to integrate WhatsApp and Messenger with third-party chats in EU to comply with DMA

Meta has outlined its plans for integrating WhatsApp and Messenger with third-party chat services like Telegram or Signal in Europe, in compliance with the European Union's Digital Markets Act (DMA). Users will be notified about the new feature and guided through a straightforward onboarding process. They can customize which third-party apps to receive messages from and manage their inbox accordingly.

Third-party chats can be integrated into the main chat list or kept separate to avoid confusion. These chats will support rich messaging features, including reactions, direct replies, typing indicators, and read receipts. Meta plans to add group chat functionality for third-party services by 2025 and voice/video calling capabilities by 2027.

To ensure safety and security, Meta will collaborate with third-party services. The feature will be available once third-party services have developed, tested, and launched the required technology. While initially limited to Europe, the company is considering a global rollout in the future.
