Google tests desktop windowing feature for Android tablets, similar to Samsung's DeX

Google is testing a new "desktop windowing" feature for Android tablets, aimed at improving multitasking by allowing users to resize and arrange apps on their screens like a desktop operating system. Available as a developer preview, this feature supports running multiple instances of apps simultaneously. Unlike the default full-screen mode, apps will now open in windows that can be repositioned, maximized, or closed, pretty similar to Apple's iPad Stage Manager and Samsung DeX, both of which offer comparable window management capabilities.

A taskbar at the bottom of the screen displays running apps similar to how it would appear in conventional desktop operating systems, allowing for easier switching between applications. Users can activate the desktop windowing mode by pressing and holding the window handle at the top of an app or using a keyboard shortcut (Meta key + Ctrl + Down) if a keyboard is attached. To exit the mode, users can either close all active apps or drag a window to the top of the screen.

Currently available in the Android 15 QPR1 Beta 2 for Pixel Tablets, there is no confirmed release date for the general public, but it can be assumed that it may soon arrive on more Android tablets and possibly some foldable phones.
