Discord launches end-to-end encryption for audio and video calls
Discord has introduced end-to-end encryption (E2EE) for voice and video calls, significantly boosting the security of communications on its platform. This new feature applies to audio and video calls in direct messages (DMs), group DMs, voice channels, and Go Live streams, ensuring that even Discord cannot access the content of these conversations.
Users can now verify the encryption status of their calls and authenticate other participants. However, private messages will not be subject to E2EE and will continue to adhere to existing content moderation policies.
Discord has published a whitepaper detailing its E2EE 'DAVE' protocol and has made it available through an open-source library, promoting transparency and enabling public audits. The protocol employs industry-standard sub-protocols and cryptographic algorithms to ensure security. Discord’s first-party clients and the open-source library also support out-of-band verifications to confirm the encryption status of calls and participants.
What's the difference between a DM and a private message? Also there's no E2EE catch, like Nitro members only, correct?
From the official post on Discord's blog: . E2EE A/V will eventually become the default for voice and video in DMs, Group DMs, voice channels, and Go Live streams on Discord. We want to seamlessly enable E2EE A/V for all of Discord’s users and their many devices, without requiring them to manage identity keys or select a primary device.

Thanks for the info. My takeaway is since DMs and group DMs are listed separately, im assuming its related to the number of recipients

This is surprising but also good, I guess it's to have some excuse about there unmodderated plateform. Next step is e2ee for private chat !
