Ubuntu will adopt latest Linux kernel starting version 24.10 leaving conservative approach
Canonical has announced a significant policy change for Ubuntu's kernel version selection, starting with Ubuntu 24.10, scheduled for release in October 2024. This update will feature the latest Linux kernel series available at the time of the release, a shift from the previous practice of using "safe" kernels nearing the end of their support lifecycle. The goal is to provide users with the latest features and hardware support, addressing community demands for better performance and compatibility with newer hardware.
Traditionally, Ubuntu's cautious approach to adopting new kernels has distinguished it from other major distributions and has been a point of debate within the community. With Ubuntu 24.10, codenamed "Oracle Oriole," the distribution will include the Linux 6.11 kernel series, expected in mid to late September 2024. While interim releases, supported for nine months, may not receive newer kernels, Long Term Support (LTS) releases will continue to get newer versions via Hardware Enablement (HWE) updates from the former. Kernel Livepatches will still be available, though it's unclear if point releases of the kernel will be included in future updates.
