The old X/Twitter native Mac app has been discontinued and replaced by the iPad version

The old X/Twitter Mac app, has now been officially discontinued. Users attempting to access the old app are now prompted to "upgrade" to the X Mac app for iPad. This new app includes modern X features such as AI integration and Premium options but lacks the charm of the old Twitter app, which was free from ads, promotions, and community notes.

Notably, the new X Mac app for iPad is only compatible with Apple laptops equipped with Apple Silicon chips (M1 or higher), leaving users with older Intel Mac laptops to rely solely on the website. To minimize ads on the website, users are required to subscribe to X Premium.

Adding to the complications, users have reported account suspensions after upgrading to the new X app and logging in. X software engineer Zach Warunek has acknowledged the issue and confirmed that the team is actively investigating the problem.
