OpenAI rolls out its new enhanced voice mode to some ChatGPT Plus subscribers
OpenAI has initiated a limited rollout of its advanced voice mode for ChatGPT to a select group of ChatGPT Plus subscribers. Initially showcased at the GPT-4 launch event in May, the feature faced criticism for sounding too similar to Scarlett Johansson’s character in "Her."
Originally set for late June, the rollout was delayed by a month to improve safety and meet OpenAI's standards. The company enhanced the model's content detection, tested it with over 100 red teamers, and added filters to block copyrighted audio, responding to scrutiny over its safety policies.
The voice initially demonstrated onstage, dubbed “Sky,” was removed after Johansson raised concerns. The new voice mode now includes four preset voices created with voice actors, ensuring it cannot impersonate other people, including public figures. OpenAI plans to extend the voice mode to all ChatGPT Plus users by the fall.
