Apple plans ad-supported tier for Apple TV+ in UK to boost revenue

Apple is reportedly in talks to introduce an ad-supported tier for its streaming service, Apple TV, in the UK. This move is part of Apple's strategy to diversify its revenue streams and attract more subscribers. To support this initiative, Apple is working with the UK's Broadcaster's Audience Research Board (BARB) to develop advanced techniques for tracking advertising performance on Apple TV+.

Currently, BARB provides viewing statistics for major UK networks, including BBC, ITV, Channel 4, Sky, and Apple TV+ programming. However, these metrics mainly cover viewing times and need improvement to accurately measure ad performance, which is critical for advertisers. Apple is also engaging with ratings organizations in the United States to discuss similar ad-tracking capabilities.

This comes as Apple aims to compete with Netflix, Disney+, and Prime Video, which have successfully launched ad-supported tiers, increasing their subscriber base and revenue. The exploration of an ad-supported tier is also seen as a response to recent reports of reduced spending on Apple TV+ content.
