1Password beta update adds end-to-end encryption for your data using your saved passkeys
1Password has announced a significant update in its latest beta versions for both the browser extension and Android app, introducing the ability to use passkeys for end-to-end encryption. Traditionally, passkeys have only been used for user authentication, but with the Pseudo-Random Function (PRF) extension, they can now also encrypt data.
This update means that services relying on 1Password for passkey storage can now utilize these passkeys to encrypt data, such as private notes, eliminating the need for traditional passwords. PRF is an extension of the WebAuthn protocol, which underpins passkeys and includes optional features to enhance functionality.
With PRF support, encryption keys are protected using the same robust mechanisms that secure millions of passkeys, enabling a complete transition from passwords to passkeys for both authentication and encryption. This feature is available in the latest 1Password for Android beta (8.10.38) and the browser extension beta (2.26.1), with iOS support forthcoming in iOS 18.
