X/Twitter is starting to make likes private for all users

The micro-blogging platform X has recently implemented a significant update that makes all likes private. Starting Wednesday, users can no longer view the "Likes" tab on other profiles, effectively restricting public access to this engagement metric. Users retain the ability to see their own liked posts, but this information is now concealed from others.

The update also introduces a notification encouraging users to like more posts to enhance their "For you" feed, emphasizing personalized content recommendations. Despite these privacy adjustments, users can still view metrics such as like counts and other engagement indicators on their own posts under notifications. Posts will continue to display the total number of likes, but only the author can see the list of users who liked their post.

Previously, the option to hide likes was available exclusively to Premium subscribers, a feature introduced in September, but it has now been extended to all users across the platform. Interestingly, the company recently announced new policies that officially allow adult content on the platform.

As a social network, X offers features like hashtags, threaded conversations, and trends to keep users engaged and informed. Despite its 2.3 rating, it remains a platform for public discourse. Top alternatives to X include Mastodon, Gab, and Diaspora, which offer similar social networking capabilities.

Being an old person, it's interesting to have observed the de-evolution and dumbing down of formerly robust tech products. At one point, Youtube let you rate videos on a scale from 1-5 stars, for instance. Now you can only "thumbs up" a video, and have to use an extension to see the dislikes count. This is sad, really...

say thanks to Russians and Chinese, who have weaponized and exploited those things and turned them into a PSYOP tool. I won't be surprised if youtube hides the likes too at some point in the future.

Yay for hiding likes for mental health. Nay for the porn.
