Substack introduces video to its chat feature for deeper subscriber engagement

Substack has expanded its Chat feature to include video functionality, allowing users to record and share videos directly with their subscribers. This new feature supports instant notifications and can be restricted to paid or founding tier subscribers for targeted engagement. The addition of Video to Substack Notes in April had already sparked creativity among users, and the new video feature in Chat aims to provide a private space for candid communication, similar to voice memos or Instagram stories but without algorithmic interference.

Sharing videos is straightforward: users access the Chat tab, tap "New chat," and select the plus icon to upload or record a video. After recording, users can add captions, apply paywalls, or send email notifications to enhance engagement and control. Videos can be up to five minutes long, with 1080p or lower resolution recommended for optimal performance. Subscribers can also start their own chat threads and share videos, fostering a community atmosphere. Only subscribers can view and participate in Chat, ensuring a secure and intimate environment.

The new video feature in Chat is expected to enhance this level of personal engagement across the platform.
