openSUSE Leap 15.6 released with new Cockpit package and many sofware updates

openSUSE has unveiled Leap 15.6, the sixth and likely final update in the Leap 15 series, built on Linux kernel 6.4. This release will receive maintenance and security updates until the end of 2025, ensuring a seamless transition to Leap 16.

Leap 15.6 integrates the Cockpit package, enhancing system and container management via a web browser interface. Container technologies benefit from Podman 4.8, which includes support for Nextcloud through quadlets, and updates to Distrobox, Docker, python-podman, Skopeo, containerd, and libcontainers-common. Virtualization sees improvements with Xen 4.18, KVM 8.2.2, libvirt 10.0, and virt-manager 4.1.

Security is bolstered with OpenSSL 3.1, while database systems are updated to MariaDB 10.11.6 and PostgreSQL 16. Redis 7.2, PHP 8.2, Node.js 20, and OpenJDK 21 round out the software stack. Telecommunications software updates include DPDK 22.11 and Open vSwitch 3.1 with OVN 23.03. The KDE environment is advanced with KDE Plasma 5.27.11, KDE Frameworks 5.115.0, and Qt6 version 6.6.3, along with updated Python bindings for PyQt5 and PyQt6, compatible with Python 3.11. Leap 15.6 also supports GNOME 45, and numerous unmaintained Python packages were removed in this transition.
