Google to discontinue Stack app; users advised to export PDFs to Google Drive by Sept 24
Google's Area 120 incubator has announced that its experimental Android app, Google Stack, will be discontinued effective September 24th, making it the latest addition to Google's growing list of products Killed by Google. Stack allowed users to create or import PDFs and organize them into categories such as tax, insurance, and medical. The app featured data extraction to suggest titles and add searchable details like document dates, amounts, or issuing organizations, and also allowed users to add notes.
According to Google’s support page, Stack's functionalities have been integrated into the Google Drive app. Users are advised to export their PDFs from Stack before the discontinuation date to avoid losing their documents. To export all documents from Stack to Google Drive, users should navigate to Settings in the app and select "Export all documents to Drive." Exported PDFs will be found in a folder labeled "Stack Export" within Google Drive, but will lose all categorization and additional text.
For individual PDF export, users can use the export icon on each PDF to move it to the desired location. If users have been backing up their Stack content to Google Drive from the start, they may not need to export their documents again. For those who prefer not to keep their documents in Google Drive, they can send them to Drive first and then move them to a different location or export them directly from Stack to their preferred location. Users can also manually select and export all documents by long-pressing on the first document and using the checkboxes. After exporting, documents can be deleted from Stack through the app’s Settings.
