Popular subtitles platform Subscene announces sudden shutdown, leaving users in shock
In a surprising turn of events, an administrator of Subscene, a popular source of subtitles for movies and TV shows, has announced the site's impending closure. The announcement was made by the user that_thing in a forum post titled “Subscene is closing — so sorry”. The post, which was made without any prior warning, states the following:
“Hi everyone, im sorry to report that the site will be closing within the next 24 hours. A takeover plan was not possible. Thank you everyone for participating in this open community! Take care!”
Subscene's sudden closure has left its users in shock. The platform is widely known as a reliable source for fan-made subtitles for TV shows and movies. Prior to the announcement, there were no indications of an impending shutdown.
The announcement has triggered a flurry of responses from the site's users. Many are expressing their anger and concern over the loss of subtitles they have contributed over the years. Requests for an easy method to download all their data and subtitles before the site's closure are also prevalent. Some users have even suggested taking over the website or setting up a profile on a donation platform like Patreon to fund the site.
However, despite the many responses, that_thing has yet to provide further clarification or respond to any queries since the initial announcement.
While the closure of Subscene is a significant loss for many, there are still other alternatives available, fortunately, including sites like OpenSubtitles, Addic7ed, and Subdl, the latter being the spiritual successor to Subscene since it already hosts most of Subscene's subtitles library and users. You can also check the full list of alternatives, with similar services for users seeking subtitles for movies and TV series.
Some tech wiz should scrape the subtitle database
someone already release it, about 90GB if i right

Yeah actually Opensubtitles apparently already did that and merged it with their database https://forum.opensubtitles.org/viewtopic.php?p=50907&sid=2e17b9a1d74becbdff7bd0cf74599fa0#p50907

damn, that is sad news, I guess all that's left is OpenSubtitles now, right? I am thinking of creating a github repo where people could upload subtitles, the github API is free and doesn't require authorization
If what kontributor said in a different reply is to be believed about the 90GB for the total subtitles of the site... that could be difficult... git repos don't handle large (in terms of GBs used) repos well, speaking from experience.
