Immich joins FUTO to enhance development of open source photo and video backup solution
Alex Tran, the maintainer of Immich, a self-hosted photo and video backup solution for the web, iOS and Android, has announced that the Immich core team is joining FUTO. Known for its software and mobile apps like Grayjay and FUTO Voice, FUTO's acquisition of Immich is aimed at diversifying its portfolio, and support the development of the Immich software.
In his statement, Tran explains that “building quality open source has its challenges”, noting the dedication, time, and effort required over the past two years. The move to FUTO will enable the Immich team to work full-time on the project, while maintaining full autonomy over its direction and leadership.
Addressing potential concerns, Tran assured that Immich will continue its development direction without paywalled features. The software will remain “built for the people”, with no ads, data mining and selling, or ulterior motives.
The decision to join FUTO came after careful deliberation by the Immich team, who felt that FUTO’s vision closely aligns with their own. This move will provide the Immich team with more time for the project, as well as financial, technical, legal, and administrative support.
However, the future will reveal whether the project and team can uphold their values and promises under the new arrangement.
