Free ChatGPT users now access custom GPTs, data analytics, and vision features

ChatGPT has expanded the features available to free ChatGPT users, now including access to custom GPTs, that were previously exclusive to paid subscribers. These new capabilities encompass data analytics, vision functions, and the ability to use browse and memory features. Initially introduced with GPT-4o in early May, these tools enable users to analyze charts, ask questions about photos, and more.

Among the available custom GPTs, there are hundreds of third-party services, ranging from tools for extracting information and chatting with PDFs to other useful tools from OpenAI like DALL-E 3, or plugins from Canva, Adobe Express, or Khan Academy. You can explore all the plugins available in the store. Creators of custom GPTs can participate in a revenue-sharing program that OpenAI has been testing since March. However, free users can only discover and use existing custom GPTs, not create their own.

Despite these enhancements, paid subscribers still enjoy certain advantages, such as significantly higher message limits compared to free users. Free users who reach their message or conversation limit with GPT-4o will be switched back to GPT-3.5 and won't have access to other premium features like vision functions.

I don't like how they've done this with the free ChatGPT. I can't find a way to reliably force it to use the 3.5 model. I want to save my daily allotment of 4o messages for specific tasks but want simple 3.5 tasks first. As it is now, it seems like I am forced to use 4o until it runs out then I'm up a creek. This is another reason I prefer just using Poe now.

Either. All I seem able to do is to make a 4o query, then once that's done, resubmit the prompt as a 3.5 query. But the convo will go right back to 4o again after that. The only settings I can find are for upgrading to the full paid 4o version. Not a huge deal, but this has made me leery of opening up the ChatGPT site for random queries/prompts, saving my daily allowance of 4o content for actually important (i.e. work related) stuff. I'm mostly using Poe's basic Assistant for simple queries now (based on 3.5 as far as I know). Not a huge deal of course.
