Proton Pass introduces universal Passkey support for enhanced security and privacy
Proton has recently announced that its password manager, Proton Pass, now offers passkey support for all users, enabling the management and utilization of passkeys on all devices. Passkeys, a novel authentication method, allow users to create a pair of cryptographically linked passkeys — public and private — replacing the traditional username and password system. The private key verifies user identity during account logins and can be stored on any device or within a password manager.
According to Proton, the company's approach to passkeys in Proton Pass is distinct from other password managers, reflecting its commitment to broad accessibility of security and privacy tools. Proton Pass's passkeys are platform-agnostic, allowing users to store and manage their passkeys on any browser or in all Proton apps.
Proton has also ensured that passkeys and passwords receive equal importance in Proton apps, enabling users to store, share, and export passkeys in the same manner as passwords. The company's passkey feature is open source and based on the open FIDO standard, allowing users to verify the security of the code.
Like all Proton apps, Proton Pass safeguards your passkeys and their related metadata (such as URLs) with end-to-end encryption, ensuring data privacy. The passkey support is available on all plans, including Proton Pass for Business.
